Bauder Felt & Green roof
Winner of the Reinforced Bitumen Membranes category at The NFRC UK Roofing Awards Roofing in London 2026
Cambridge South Station is a significant new rail development designed to serve the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and its surrounding area, enhancing accessibility for thousands of people while promoting sustainable transport and supporting long-term regional growth.
A defining feature of the project is its sweeping curved roof, which creates a striking roofscape. The scale and geometry of this design made the roofing package one of the most technically challenging aspects of the build. In addition, the inclusion of extensive green roofing formed a key part of the project’s environmental strategy, with the roof designed not just as a protective covering but as a functional element contributing to biodiversity and long-term sustainability.
Green roof systems were installed across both flat and pitched areas, adding further complexity and placing greater demands on the waterproofing system. A reinforced bituminous membrane was selected to provide the durability and flexibility needed to suit the intricate design.
